Lines and spaces, chez Wergo Records!

» Naomi Pinnock

Dear friends and colleagues,

Like many of you, we have been confined for two months now, and we share a widespread uneasiness with all our colleagues in the artistic world. Until recently, we would never have thought it possible to spend all the hours of the day managing cancellations and postponements... The first few weeks of containment have kept us busy!

Not knowing when they will be able to create again, artists everywhere are posting as much as they can on the web, and are calling for inspiration, innovative ideas and projects for the better days to come... It is in this light that we hope to find creative ways to see you soon in person!

In the meantime, since we've been using our time at home to go through our archives, we invite you to spend time with us on our YouTube channel - especially our new "Les 20 ans du QB" playlist, where we will put, one by one, some of our best-ofs and previously unreleased recordings. For this week’s launch, we are featuring Naomi Pinnock's String Quartet No. 2, recorded during our concert at Milton Court, Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London in December 2019.

About the recording, and a new disc with Wergo Records

We had a great time working with Naomi last November in the Netherlands, performing her piece at the De Link Tilburg concert series. The economy in her material and meticulous attention to detail are evident in her string quartet, and it was rewarding to engage with the extreme characteristics of this piece.

Together with our faithful and always-good-humoured sound engineer Stefan Schmidt, we recorded the work in a small chapel typical of the hilly region of Yorkshire, UK (no heating and the closest washroom in a garden centre 5 km away!) — not  far from where Naomi grew up.

We are delighted to announce the release of this piece on Wergo Records’ Portrait CD of Naomi Pinnock!  Lines and spaces includes performances by the London Sinfonietta and Ensemble Adapter.

"The circling, persistent viola solo with which the quartet begins is repeated, chopped up, magnified, distorted and stretched out. This treatment of musical material is similar to my manipulation of text in recent works. It has a lot to do with memories - how sometimes a vividly experienced dream can suddenly vanish upon waking and all you can grasp hold of are fragments. And how these fragments often linger but finally fade away."
